The National Health Service (NHS) has asked that the Department of Health’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) not take a decision on the sale of a prescription drug which it is concerned about.
A recent study which analysed the claims of approximately 3,000 NHS patients over six years found that they were over treated for erectile dysfunction in a majority of cases.
In a separate review of claims for the erectile dysfunction medicine, it was found that the NHS had over treated people for four of its drugs: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Priligy. In addition, the National Health Service has been found to have over treated patients for four of its erectile dysfunction medicines.
The NHS is concerned about the over-treatment of the patients. “This is not a good idea for anyone,” said Dr Sarah Balsknow, Director of the Division of Medical Services at the Department of Health.
“We want to make sure that we treat everybody who has been prescribed these medicines.”
Dr Balsknow added that it is also important to see the patients to ensure they are taking the medicines at a suitable time.
“When you look at the claims and you look at their prices, we see that a majority of the patients are over treated,” she said.
The National Health Service has asked the Department of Health for its opinion as to whether it would be appropriate for the patients to be given a prescription.
“This is a very important decision,” said Balsknow. “I have never been on this issue.”
